Here is yet another example of how important Michigan is to the United States economy.
It was reported by the Detroit Free Press over the weekend that “A U.S. Department of Homeland Security report indicated a 6-month shutdown of the Poe Lock in Sault Ste. Marie, if one occurred, would plunge the nation into a recession.” The article went on to state that the closing of the locks would “result in the loss of some 11 millions jobs” in the United States.
This news is particularly interesting in this day in age, with so much of the U.S. economy shifting toward more white collar jobs, especially in the technology sector.
Here in Michigan, we’ve known how amazing these Soo Locks are for a long time (and how beautiful they are) since they first opened in the mid-1800’s, but it is finally time the nation learns how critical their functionality is to supporting a large portion of the industrial jobs in America.
