Even after years away, U.P. draws its people home

DETROIT FREE PRESS — If they gave out frequent-crosser badges on the Mackinac Bridge, Tim Mulvaney would have earned one by now.

He likes his life in Lansing, don’t get him wrong. He has friends and things to do. Two of his three children live close. His wife, Debbie, has a job she likes with the state’s agriculture department.

But a large part of his heart is still in his Upper Peninsula hometown of Escanaba.
